Safar al Muzaffar

 

(The Second Month of Islam)

Safar is the second month of the Islamic lunar calendar.  Contrary to popular belief amongst the Muslims, it is not a month that brings illnesses, problems and diseases on Earth.  Some Muslims do not hold weddings and organise journeys due to such rumours about Safar. Remember, Allah (subhana wa ta’ala), according to person’s deeds, decides good or bad for them.  As the Hadith of the Messenger of Allah (sallahu alaihi wasallam) says “Kama Tadinu Tudan” (you shall be treated according to your deeds)

Islam condemns considering any Islamic Month carrying misfortunes or disasters for the people. This is also evident from the Hadith, narrated by Abu Huraira (radi allahu anhu), that the beloved of Allah (sallalahu alaihi wasallam) said”

“(There is) no Adwa (Without Allah’s will no contagious diseases are transmitted).  Nor is there any bad omen, nor is there any hamah, nor is there any bad omen in the month of Safar and one should run away from leper, as he would run away from lion” (Bukhari)

Hadrat Jabir (radi allahu anhu) also reports that the Messenger of Allah said:

“No illnesses, misfortunes, calamities, nor signs of devilish influences arrive upon this earth in the month of Safar” (Bukhari)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) also said “no ominous portents regarding the month of Safar” (Bukhari, Vol. 1, p. 857)

Hadrat Allama Amjad Ali (alaihi rahmah) in his invaluable research Bahar-e-Shariah also mentions that there is no evidence to support the fact that Safar brings disasters and misfortunes. This clearly illustrates that any belief in such rumours is completely unislamic and cannot be proven from the Sunna of the Prophet and actions of the Sahaba and the Aulia.

This belief is in fact tracked back to the insecurities of the Pagans of Arabia. Some believed Safar to be a snake, which lives in the stomach of human being and causes pain if hungry. Some also considered Safar as a disease similar to Jaundice in the modern era. It would not be completely illogical to claim that these beliefs might be the reason as to why some Muslims are still influences by such myths.

 

The Sufis

The myth that Safar brings diseases and problems is clearly exposed, however some Sufis in their books did discuss  the Spiritual hardships during this month. This must not be confused and compared to beliefs in calamities and misfortunes. This is because; the history states that Hazrat Ali (radi allahu anhu) and Bibi Fatimah (radi allahu anha) were married in the month of Safar in 2AH. If Safar in reality brought misfortunes then surely the perfect couple in Islam would not have been married in this month.

Some Sufis, particularly Hazrat Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar (alahi rahma) explains about the spiritual hardships in this month. A book called Rahat ul Qulub, explains his views by Mehboobe Ilahi Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia (alaihi rahma). The book explains about the spiritual hardships of all the Prophets (peace be upon them all) during this month. It is must be noted that Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) often tested His Prophets to the highest and extreme levels. This cannot be translated as misfortunes or bad omen for the Prophets of God, but the level of love of Allah for His beloveds. He only tests those whom He extremely loves. The opinions of Baba Fareed Ganj Shakar must be understood from a spiritual angle not be comprehended as bad omen or misfortune.

1) The battle of Abwaa took place in the month of Safar 2AH

2) The battle of Khaybar took place in the month of Safar 7AH

3) Hadrat Ali (radi allahu anhu) married Hadrat fatima (radi allahu anha) in this month 2AH

4) Hadrat Khubaib bin Adey (radi allahu anhu) was martyred in this month 4 AH

5) Zaid bin Thabina (radi allahu anhu) was also martyred in this month 4 AH

URS of Pir Syed Mehr Ali Shah (alaihi rahma)

29th Safar

He was a great Sufi and a respected Hanafi Scholar belonging to the family of Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him). During his childhood he would often seclude himself from the Worldly affairs and leave his house in the late hours of night towards rivers and mountains. This was perhaps an indication towards the greatness of the man. He studied Quran and received education from multiple cities in India particularly Kanpur, Saharanpur and also Aligarh where he remained for 2 and a half years studying in the Madarassah of Moulana Lutfullah.

The fact that he used to practice seclusion since his childhood meant that he would always walk on the path of Sufism. He was a devout follower of the Chishtiyya Nizamia order, in which he received Khilafah from Hazrat Shamsuddin (alaihi rahma), who was also his Pir-o-Murshid. The humbleness and sincerity of the Shaykh is evident in his great works. Amongst many of his invaluable researches is a book called Saif-e-Chishtiyya (the sword of chishtiyya). This book was an open and clear refutation of the beliefs and the movement of the Ahmadiyya/Qadianis. In this book the great Alim discusses about the irrationality of their beliefs and the reasons for the charges of heresy against them. The Shaykh was also propagator of the concept of Wahdatul Wujood (unity of Being). He was amongst the very few Sufis, who elucidated this concept from the Holy Quran.

In reality Allah (subhana wa ta'ala) gifted the Shaykh with enormous abilities and brilliance. He was a great poet and penned a lot of inspiring poetries, which are recited in the Islamic gatherings till date. The Sunni World was recently in shock and despair to hear the grandson of Pir Mehr Ali Shah, Hazrat Pir Naseeruddin Naseer departure from this World. The team of Spiritual Foundation prays that May Allah bless this family and May He give Pir Mehr Ali Shah great successors (like Pir Naseer) till the time ends. Ameen!. Lets end with the famous words of the great Shaykh:

Mukh chan badr shah shaani ay
Matthay chamkay laaT noorani ay
Kaali zulf tay akh mastaani ay
Mahmoor akheeN hain madh bhaRiyaaN

His face is like the full moon, worthy of his regal stature!
A radiant light shines on his brow
His tresses are black, his eyes are intoxicating!
Those dreamy eyes are full of the wine of love!

Is surat nooN mein jaan aakhaaN
Jaanaan ke jaan-e-jahaan aakhaaN?
Sach aakhaaN tay Rabb dee shaan aakhaaN
Jis shaan tooN shaanaaN sab baniyaaN

Shall I call this countenance my soul?
Or my soul's soul? Or the soul of the worlds?
If I speak truthfully, I shall call it the glory of my Lord
The glory from which all others were created!

Subhan Allah! Maa ajmalaka
Maa ahsanaka, maa akmalaka

Glory be to Allah! There is no one more beautiful than thee!
No one more excellent than thee, no one more perfect!

Kithay Mihr Ali kithay teri sanaa
Gustaakh akheeN kithay jaa aRiyaan!

What is the status of Mihr Ali that he dares to praise thee?
Where have these insolent eyes dared to gaze?


 

URS of Imam-e-Rabbani, Mujaddid Alf-i-thani Hazrat Shaykh Ahmad al-Faruqi Sirhindi (radi allahu anhu)

28th Safar

A great Indian Sufi, Theologian and Scholar who through his dedication and commitment revived the entire Sunni community in retaliation to the Religious Pluralism concept propagated by the Moghul Emperor Akbar and his few supporters. He spoke openly against the policy of Sull i kul (mixing of all religions) developing from Akbar. It was his courage and bravery to stand up to an illiterate Emperor that led to many proclaiming him as Mujaddid Alf-i-Thani (the reviver of the second millennium). He was a direct descendant of the second Caliph Umar bin Khattab (radi allahu anhu) and a follower of the Naqshbandi Sufi order. Although most of his predecessors believed in the theory of Wahdatul Wujood (unity of being) articulated by Hazrat Mohiyuddin Ibn Arabi (radi allahu anhu), however Sirhindi rejected it and replaced it with Wahdat al Shuhud (unity of witnessing). The debates on both theories are constant even in the present era. We as novice devotees on the path towards the divine, avoid criticisms and intend to receive the most out of both legends of Tasawwuf.

He believed and practiced in the sober mysticism, which meant progressing in the path of Tasawwuf with strict adherence to Shariah. He during his life penned almost more than 500 letters recorded under the name of "Maktubaat". In these letters the Shaykh discusses his experiences and propagates his invaluable ideas and advices. He was from Punjab and today is resting in his grave in the same region. The team of Spiritual Foundation salutes the great Mujaddid and prays that May Allah (sunhana wa ta'ala) through the Waseela of the Shaykh make us true obedient and help us to demolish hatred, hypocrisy and violence. URS of the Great Mujaddid A'la Hazrat Imam Ahmad Raza Khan (radi allahu anhu)

 

25th Safar

Indeed he was the greatest scholar to have represented the deen of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) in the modern era. He possessed expertise in the subjects of economics, science, astronomy, Fiqh, Usool Fiqh, Tafseer, Usool Tafseer, Hadith, Usool Hadith, Tasawwuf, Logic, Philosophy and Poetry (and many others). When the scholars of India, affected by the impure air arriving from Najd started questioning the status of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Imam Ahmad Raza khan's pen and character played a huge and crucial in demolishing their beliefs and ideas. He stood alone against all the evil forces. He answered every question regarding this matter and challenged the corrupted Mullas to prove his stance wrong according to Quran and Sunna. None of them had the knowledge or courage to prove the beliefs of the great Imam false. Remember! Imam Ahmed Raza khan did not propagate new ideas but restored the beliefs of the Sahabah and the Aulia into the common man. He had enormous love for the Prophet (peace be upon him) and his pure family. It is often reported that every time he would see a Sayed (descendant of the Prophet), he would stand up and give them respect, despite their age or knowledge. Huzoor Muhadith-e-Azam Hind (alaihi rahma) (Sheikh-e-Tariqat's grandfather), who despite being his student would  receive such respect and honour from the great Imam, because he belonged to the household of Ahle Bait. It is also believed that the great Imam used to smell a Sayed and perfectly identify one in a public without knowing about them.

In his life time he authored many amazing and brilliant books and Fatawas. The most famous book is called Fatawa Rizvia, which contains thousands of verdicts by the Imam. Today every scholar is reliant upon this book to issue their Fatwa regarding various different matters. Another Famous book by his Eminence is Kanzul Iman, which is the translation and Tafseer of the Holy Quran. It is a book that no scholar has been able to match up with till date.

Today, we celebrate the Urs of the one, who dedicated his entire life in the service of the deen of the Messenger of Allah. Today we remember the one, who in his entire life remembered the Prophet. Today we remember the one, who saved all of us from the evil forces containing corrupted beliefs.
